The Sims 4 Adds Ghosts For Free On October 1st!

October 1st marks a special day for any Sims fan who was disappointed with the lack of some features missing from the Base game. Starting today, you can download the patch for free by signing into your Origin account.

A new Spooky music station is also available!

When a Sim turns into a ghost, they become a Non Playable Character with several interactions. Ghosts can scare or pass through Sims; repair broken items and possess them too.

Ghosts can even woohoo!
Ghosts can even Woohoo!

You can turn them into playable characters by inviting them to your household. Doing so, lets them acquire a job, get married, or do other interactions like a regular Sim would.

Ghosts have a unique set of behaviors depending on how they died.

Type of Death: Behavior

  • Fire: Triggers a new interaction when angry.
  • Hunger: Seek to satisfy nourishment.
  • Cowplant: Cares for plants in a good mood, kills them in a bad mood.
  • Electrocution: Break electronic devices, and tends to use the hand buzzer interaction.
  • Emotional Death: Spread emotions to others.
  • Old Age / Overexertion: Relaxed and takes it easy.

Sims with high enough gardening and cooking skills can bring ghosts back to life. You’ll need the “Ambrosia” recipe which requires the Deathflower (a new garden plant), the Potion of Youth, and an Angelfish.

If you’re tired of ghosts, you can banish them off your lot by interacting with the urn or tombstone. That’s all for now. See you soon!

The Sims 4: Official Launch Trailer

This is it, everyone! We’re almost up to the release of The Sims 4. In this official launch trailer we find out several things: Babs and Ollie have kids, Gladys has been getting some action, June Kay and Steve Fogel are newlyweds, and we’re still not quite sure if Pancake Bob did stay up past midnight.

We’ll have several articles up in time for The Sims 4; it will explore some of the gameplay and casual modding aspects of the game. Furthermore, we’ll focus on news for other simulation games as well. Stay tuned!

Sims 4: Live Playthrough at Gamescom 2014

Peter Moore (COO of Electronic Arts) and Rachel Franklin (Executive Producer of The Sims 4) presented a live demonstration of The Sims 4 at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany.

Sims 4 Angela Merkel

Using the power of the Create A Sim tool, they designed a Sim based off of Angela Merkel, the chancellor of Germany. She looks close enough for the most part, just with a bit more volume to her hair.

Sims 4 Peeter Moore

Next, they showed off Peter Moore’s Sim and made him extremely muscular since he’s been training for marathons. His Sim had some funky body proportions, made even more awkward when he switched into his ‘executive’ outfit. Certainly, you can just click on a body part and shrink those bulging muscles right away.

Sims 4 Build Mode

They proceeded to show off the Build Mode, where you can move an entire mansion just by dragging it across the screen. It wasn’t as snappy as it looked in the trailer videos, but to be fair, it was a complex house that may have needed some time to process moving all those rooms.

Willow Creek neighborhood 1

We even got a little bird’s-eye view of one of the neighborhoods in Willow Creek. Look closely at one of the houses designed to look like the Freezer Bunny.

Sims 4 Pancake bob

In this neighborhood, we get to meet Pancake Bob, whose current mood state made him depressed. Peter Moore’s Sim, in contrast, was generally happy, providing for some unique interactions between the two. Pancake Bob’s emotional interactions lets him complain to others about his problems or ask for advice from other Sims. Peter Moore, on the other hand, could cheer him up, or brighten his day to improve his outlook.

Sims 4 Cowplant

Lastly, we were treated to a special scene with the Cow Plant; which then proceeded to eat Peter Moore as soon as he grabbed the cake dangling from the plant’s tongue. A few moments later, the cow spat him right back out, immediately placing Peter in a bad mood.

Anyway, the major announcement at this event was for the Create A Sim demo which was released yesterday to the general public. I guess the timing of the conference was supposed to coincide with its release, but it appears this was a little too late.

Moodlets and Emotion Based Interactions: The Sims 4 Live Mode

Magnolia Blossom Park Sims 4

Afternoon Simmers! Today we got an extended look at Live Mode footage from The Sims 4. Producers Ryan Vaughan and Graham Nardone presented a live walkthrough of how emotional states change your Sim’s behavior.

SIms 4 Very Angry

Ryan and Graham loaded up their Sims at Magnolia Blossom Park in Willow Creek. Ryan Vaughan, an active Sim with the Bro trait, was feeling “Very Angry” from a previous altercation. The emotional states your Sim receives are driven by the various moodlets that appear based on their personality, and the effects of the interactions they had. Ryan’s “Steaming Mad” moodlet kept him in an angry state. This unlocked further interactions that allowed him to perform “Peeved Push Ups” and “Sit Ups of Fury.”

Now he can channel all his anger into performing exercises that build his athletic skill faster than if he was in a good mood.

Energized Sims 4
Energized Sims get tired less and are better at physical activities.

Graham, another Sim with the Bro trait, instead felt “Energized!” This was due to both his “Brisk Shower” moodlet, as well as his Bro personality trait which activated the “Hangin’ with Bros” moodlet.

With his energized emotional state, he can do unique interactions like “Give Pep Talk” or “Hip Bump.” When he shifted over into the “Happy” emotional state, he could “Brighten [the] Day” of another Sim or give a “Heartfelt Compliment.”

The Sims 4 Sad

One neat thing is how you can see their emotional states through their expressions and animations without clicking on them. A Sim who’s sad will walk slouched over with their head hanging low, clearly signifying that something is wrong.

Personality based Sims 4

So far we’ve talked about emotion based interactions, so let’s dabble into personality based interactions. For these kinds of interactions, a little icon depicting the Sim’s personality will display next to the name of the interaction. So for example, a geek Sim can “Debate Game Strategies” (controller icon), while a bro Sim could perform a “Bro Bump.” Sims can also perform interactions outside of their personality traits to Sims that have them. For example, Graham’s Sim, who is pretty much a computer nerd, could “Discuss Fitness Techniques” and “Show Off Muscles” to Ryan.

Sims 4 Travel Screen
Traveling is actually done through a world map menu.

Though it may appear like a menu system here, traveling to different locations is done via a world map menu.

Ryan and Graham traveled to the local Gym to see who could level up their fitness skill the fastest. But Ryan gained a bit of an advantage by calling over a Sim who has high fitness skill to mentor him during the workout.

Ryan fitness level up

A combination of Ryan’s angry emotional state, his physically active personality, and the mentorship his friend provided enabled Ryan to workout faster, building up his athletic skill in no time!

Well that’s the end of this article. Stay tuned for part two where we’ll talk about “The Gallery,” where you can upload and download Sims and more!

So What’s Not In The Sims 4 Base Game?

The Sims 4 Gladys Chuck Party

Yesterday there were a few major announcements as to what wasn’t coming in the base game. Even though this news is disappointing, it doesn’t mean these features will only show up in an expansion pack. Recall in The Sims 3 where features “intended” for an expansion appeared for free during a base game patch. We can’t confirm if this will be done for The Sims 4, but it’s something to keep in mind after the game’s release.

Sims 4 Kids

Anyone looking to make a splash are lucked out as pools will not be entering the base game. In relation to that, swimming and swimwear are out too! And as cool as it is to edit the  foundation, basements will not be arriving by launch.

As for your Sim’s family, though you can still have babies, you won’t see any toddlers in the base game.  Lastly, don’t expect to see weather anytime soon, you’ll just have to wait patiently for further announcements.

One extra tidbit; the woohoo skill which was previously a hidden skill during early development, it was removed from the game entirely and doesn’t look like it will be coming back.

The Sims 4: Moods, Relationships, and Whims!

Gameinformer recently got a hands-on session with The Sims 4, which provided us with some more information on how The Sims will express themselves through their daily lives. Below is a summary of what was posted in the article.

The Sims 4 Treadmill

Sims will let you know how they feel through their facial expressions and actions. This means, if a conversation is going sour, you’ll see it evidently on their faces. The game even gives you the option to change the course of conversation once it goes downhill.

They’ll have access to certain interactions based on their current emotional state. Like when a Sim is feeling flirty, they’ll gain access to striking a seductive pose. You can influence a Sim to a particular emotional state by socializing with others or interacting with objects. Their environment also lends a hand in influencing their emotions too.

 Sims 4 Mood

As you play your Sims, you’ll typically run into 1 – 3 emotional states throughout the day. The mood shifts are supposed to feel natural, so you won’t see Sims bouncing around emotions so quickly.

Sims 4 Relationship

The relationship status indication has changed. There’s now two bars, one bar for friendship, and another for romance level. Due to this, you can have situations where a Sim could be romantically involved with someone they detest.

 Sims 4 Aspirations

Aspirations are back! A similar concept to wishes will be brought over as well. However, they’re going to be called “Whims” which are short-term goals the game generates for your Sim. These might be easy or hard to complete depending on the goals.

The Sims 4 Willow Creek Rocket

One final tidbit we’ll leave with you was this line from the Gameinformer article. “Your Sim is no longer attached to one neighborhood, they can work in one and live in another.”  It appears The Sims is getting closer to bridging the gap between itself and Simcity.

E3 is currently in progress, and we hope to provide you with even more information later this week. (Like the Caliente Sisters and Don Lothario returning!) But until then…farewell.

The Sims 4: See How A Sim’s Personality Drives Their Behavior

Rachel Franklin, executive producer of The Sims 4, kicked off the E3 festivities by introducing us to new gameplay footage. It’s apparent that the focus on The Sims in this iteration are their varying personalities and emotions. Are they ambitious and perfectionist? Or are they clumsy and hot headed? These are just a few of the personalities you can explore in The Sims 4! These personalities don’t just exist in a bubble, they may even influence other Sims to respond in particular ways.

Sims 4 Chuck

For example, Rachel introduced a hot-headed, active bookworm Sim named Chuck. One day he was reciting poetry to his eccentric neighbor Gladys. Due to his low skill levels, his poems were terrible, and Gladys hated them so much that she attacked him.

The Sims 4 Chuck Mad

After losing the fight, Chuck got so mad that the next day at the gym, he was enraged, pushing his workout to the limit.

The Sims 4 Gladys Chuck Party

In another scenario with the same two Sims, Chuck is having a house party, schmoozing with the guests. Gladys (who’s still mad from the previous day) stopped by and crashed the party. In this situation, her foul mood made the party guests feel uncomfortable, some of them face palming at the horrid turn in events.

The Sims 4 Workout

One very notable aspect of The Sims is how expressive their emotions are. You can see the differences in the way people work out when they’re happy, depressed, or energized.

Sims 4 Die of Laughter 2

Sometimes these emotions can take a turn for the worse, where a Sim can die literally from laughter. Lyndsay Pearson, senior producer of The Sims 4, stated that there are multiple types of emotion-based deaths. This doesn’t seem to be sitting well for the fan community, but hopefully we’ll have more information soon on how we’re able to avoid it

The Sims 4 will be releasing on September 2nd in North America, and September 5th in Europe.
