Personality, Traits, Genetics in The Sims 4 CAS Demo

simcitizens staff

We here at SimCitizens got our hands on the Create A Sim demo and would like to give a detailed three part walkthrough of what we experienced. Keep in mind that this is an early demo and that many things may change for the final release.

cas initial

Here we have a preset Sim generated by the game. You may have seen these Sims in promotional material for the game. There’s a lot to cover here, so let’s take it step-by-step.

1.) Clicking the Plumbob will open the Personality settings.

personality

  1. Clicking here will bring up two text boxes for choosing your Sim’s first and last name.
  2. Your Sim’s gender can be switched with these two buttons.
  3. The life stages are shown here. For the demo, only the Young Adult stage is available.
  4. This opens a drop down menu with a selection of unique walk styles. There are nine available, including Default, Perky, Snooty, Swagger, Feminine, Tough, Goofy, Sluggish, and Bouncy. The latter two will not be included in the full release’s CAS. They will instead likely be temporary, emotion-based walk styles.
  5. There are three voices per gender to pick from. The pitch can be adjusted higher or lower to your liking. Male Sims can have a Clear, Warm, or Brash voice, while females can have a Sweet, Melodic, or Lilted voice.
  6. If you have more than one Sim in your household, a button for editing your currently active Sim’s relationships will appear. Two young adults may be roommates, siblings, or married.

aspirations

2.) Let’s move on to traits and aspirations. There are ten aspiration categories, each including one or more aspirations to choose from and a bonus trait. My Sim, for example, has the Computer Whiz aspiration. This is part of the Knowledge category, which also includes the Renaissance Sim and Nerd Brain aspirations. Having a Knowledge aspiration gives my Sim the Quick Learner bonus trait. With this he’ll be able to learn skills faster.

traits

There are 35 traits spanning four types: Emotional, Hobby, Lifestyle, and Social. As there are only three traits per Sim, you may want to choose wisely.

my traits

My Sim, for example, has the Geek, Lazy, and Creative traits.

The Geek trait allows him to find Collectibles more easily and Discuss Geek Things with Sims sharing the Geek trait. It also means that when playing video games or reading sci-fi novels, my Sim will become Happy. If he doesn’t play enough, he could become Tense.

The Lazy trait will give my Sim high Moodlets for napping, watching TV, or using comfortable furniture. However, it also makes my Sim become Fatigued faster when exercising and he will grow Tense when performing household chores.

Finally, with the Creative trait my Sim will have a high chance of becoming Inspired and can Share Creative Ideas with any other Sim. If he goes a certain amount of time without performing a creative task, he will become upset.

3.) From here you can access any Sims in your household by clicking on their portrait and add new Sims by clicking the Add a Sim button to the right. You can have up to eight Sims in a single household.

genetics

You can also Play with Genetics. This allows you to create a new family member based on your Sim’s genetics. For the demo we could only create a sibling. These randomized siblings shared our Sim’s skin tone and tended to have the same eye color, hair color, hair texture, and facial hair in addition to similarly shaped faces and bodies.

4.) This area contains buttons for randomizing the appearance of your Sim and undoing or redoing changes made to it. A checklist feature for randomization has been added, which allows you to choose which parts of your Sim you want randomized.

5.) Starting over or saving your household can be done with these two buttons. Starting a new household will generate a random preset Sim and remove any Sims you were previously working on.

save household

When saving your Sim you can change the household name and add a description. The camera button will randomize the poses in the household portrait. At the bottom left there is a button for uploading your household to The Gallery and another for sharing your uploaded household on Facebook. Finalizing your save is done by clicking the lower right button. The household is saved to My Library.

6.) Here you’ll find buttons for saving your household, opening the gallery, the notification wall, and the options menu. Various notes about your online interactions will pop up on the Notification Wall. From the Options Menu you can access the game’s settings, find help on the EA site, view lessons that will teach you about various features in Create A Sim, and quit the game. As this demo only features Create A Sim, the settings are fairly limited.

The next part of our walkthrough will focus on customizing our Sim’s appearance.

The Sims 4: A Quick Look at Genetics

Since the original Sims games, the ‘Create A Sim’ options have greatly improved. With a simple click of the mouse, you can mold and sculpt your Sims. You can adjust their faces and bodies, and in no time, customize them down to the tiniest detail!

Sims 4 Traits

The game comes with a variety of face templates that let you create Sims from different ethnic backgrounds, so you can create people from around the world. But there’s more to making a Sim than just their looks. Their personalities are another important aspect, and with the new ‘Bro’ trait, your Sim can experience a budding bromance when combined with certain “Emotional States.”

The Sims 4 CAS

DNA has been substantially improved. You can still try for a baby which will take on some features from their parents. Or in ‘Create A Sim’, you can use two Sims to preview how their child would appear. If you aren’t completely satisfied, you can modify the child’s looks even further. In addition, you can create family members from the genetics of a Sim, meaning you can create a brother or sister based off the original host, just like that!

The Sims 4 has so many promising features and more to be revealed; let’s look forward to its Fall release!

Bonus Tidbit from SimGuruGraham:

  • The Bro Trait isn’t a male only trait, it can be used by both sexes.

Sims 4 Create A Sim: Male Clothing Options Preview

Just a quick post for today. The Sims 4 revealed a new screenshot which displays some of the clothing options available for men. There also appears to be some pre-selected color options available for the outfits.

Sims 4 Bella and Mortimer Goth

In the new Sims 4 Create A Sim video, Producer, Ryan Vaughan opens up highlighting the “Direct Manipulation Tool.” It can be used to edit the size and proportion of a body part without the use of menus. With a pinch here and a pull there, you can create your own full figured or sculpted version of Bella Goth.

Sims 4 Muscle Thickness Slider

There are two body sliders that control the overall musculature and chubbiness of a Sim. You can slide them independently to create various builds from stocky to muscular to thin and frail. You can also select from a variety of preset builds if you’re in a hurry.

Sims 4 Diversity

One feature that was highlighted in a previous broadcast, was the use of ethnic diversity to make a SIM appear as if they came from certain parts of the world. Just click a face template and your Sim could have African, Asian, or facial features of other diversities.

Sims 4 CAS Eyebrow Edit

In “Detailed Edit Mode” you can hover the mouse over certain areas of the face to customize minute details. Some customizable areas include cheekbones, eye depth, eyebrow curvature, and mustache editing. You can also apply other facial features like moles and wrinkles.

Sims 4 Facial Hair

Speaking of mustaches, we were given a quick glance of the available facial hair options in The Sims 4. Sideburns, mustaches, beards, and goatees gives our Sims a more rugged appearance.

With further customization you can choose the way the walk, their voices, and personality traits. While adding personality traits, you can give your Sim an aspiration that can unlock additional traits. For example, a “Renaissance Sim” could have access to the “Quick Learner” trait, which lets them learn skills faster. The “Friend to the World” aspiration could unlock the “Gregarious” trait which helps them build friendships faster.

Well that’s all for now, in the future they plan to show off the new build tools. See you soon!

Sims 4: Sims Campers Explore the Create A Sim Mode

Sims Camp

Sims Camp attendees at Gamescom have provided a lot of information to impart regarding The Sims 4. It should be noted this game is still in it’s alpha stage, so information is subject to  change.

The Sims 4 Create-A-Sim Female

Participants had the opportunity to attend sessions with the game producers, who provided information and answered questions about The Sims 4. While they report that the producers refuse to commit to a release timeframe, and there is still a lot of work to be done, there are still a lot of things to look forward to as well. Among them: A direct manipulation tool which allows players to make minute adjustments in physical characteristics including body shape, body size, face, skin tone, hair, facial hair voice and clothing. Once your perfect Sim has been created, you can “lock in” your choices, or even opt for the randomizing feature. The CAS will work on three different levels for customization, each getting more detailed and minute.

Also, hair and hats will be selected independently so Sims can rock any hat with the hairstyle! One drawback; hair cannot be made longer using the direct manipulation, so you’re stuck with the length you choose. New Sim female voice styles include sweet, lilted and melodic, while males may choose from brash, clear or warm. Possible future options discussed among the design team include favorite colors and food types.

 The Sims 4 Depressed Walking

Players will have over 50 traits to choose from in the base game; even Aspirations will make their return. Sims will actually be able to die from emotions, and will also randomly demonstrate either right or left-handedness! Personality will be captured through walking styles, such as perky, swagger and snooty; these can be overridden by another emotion, such has happiness or grumpiness. Children will be able to inherit these walking style from their parents too!

All in all, the Sim Campers relate that even the unfinished, unpolished product made playing The Sims 3 feel tired and dated. There’s a lot to look forward to so you can expect to see some new information from Build and Buy mode once the news embargo lifts on September 11th, 2013. See you later!

The Sims 4 Create A Sim Has Ethnic Diversity (Live Broadcast Recap)

The Sims 4 Create-A-Sim Female

This morning, Jill Johnson, Associate Producer of The Sims 4, showed off the new Create A Sim tool during the live broadcast. We can’t stress enough that what you’re seeing now is the early development stages of The Sims 4. Since they’re taking in feedback from all around the globe, the game’s design and features are subject to change.

Right off the bat, you can begin customizing your Sim’s proportions by manipulating several control points around the body. Just like clay, you can sculpt the body by dragging the mouse around each point.  Want to have narrow shoulders with meaty forearms, or sculpt curvaceous thighs and small feet? Go ahead, the possibilities are endless!

Sims 4 Body Sliders

Turning the Sim around unravels even more customizable areas. You can adjust the size of the belly, or increase the size of their booty!

Sims 4 Ethnic Diversity

The design team has created a wide variety of ethnic face templates to choose from. You are free to customize them even further in “Detail Edit Mode,” like changing their pupil sizes, or adjusting their eyelids and folds.

Sims 4 Bodies and Skin Tones

There’s even a wide assortment of body templates to choose from, and you can adjust their physical attributes through the “Fitness” and “Heaviness” sliders. The former controls how muscular your Sim looks with abs and all, while the latter controls their chubbiness.

The Sims 4 Hats and Hairs

Hats are now separate from hairstyles! You can now place a hat on any hairstyle you please.

The Sims 4 Clothing Options

The Sims 4 returns with the standard clothing options of tops, bottoms, and shoes. The boots will now go over the pants, however, if you wear bell bottoms, the boots tuck under the pants.

The Sims 4 Swagger

After you’ve finished customizing their looks, it’s time to choose their traits, aspiration, and walking styles. So far there’s four different walking styles; default, perky, snooty, and swagger.

Well that’s it for now, the next Live Broadcast will air September 17th, so we’ll see you then!

 Notes from the Live Broadcast:
